I interview Quinton about his Cystic Fibrosis. I knew little about this horrid disease and how it takes so many young lives. A childhood friend Gerry Lawlor recently passed - he was in his 50's. Early in 2009 we did a swim for CF - I swam 5km. My body has never been the same!

Railroaded - A One Act Play

Railroaded is a play about small town gossip. Black humour. There is a bit of crude language towards the end. It was workshopped and then performed in the old NIDA Theatre in the grounds of the University of NSW in 1987.

At EURO RSCG In Bangkok I was CD of the DIRECT side. A colleague, Herb, was "off his head" because he had been given the task of creating the company Christmas card - he ranted and raved that he had no time to work on it. Sometimes ideas just come - and in that instant of him complaining I said "what if we......................" and this idea was born. He did the wonderful art-direction. Our HQ in Paris voted it the best card of all their agencies around the world - and a piece of work I am very proud of. I suppose it also relfected how some of us in the agency felt. And encompassed the Thai value of friendship.

My voice has been used in a multitude of ways - television, radio, cinema, documentaries, in-flight, narration, cartoons, games, corporate videos and messages on hold.

I trained in Sydney with Max Rowley, AFTRS and six months with Russell Jarrett - Russell is a RADA trained director who really showed me how to get the best out of my voice. I had the honour to recite a piece from "A Man for all Seasons" at his 80th birthday.

My voiced has been used in many Asian countries including India. Australia and NZ.

Pat's Uninteresting Tours

Little did I know that this idea of madness would pay my way for three years. A tour to the rubbish tip (with wine tasting), sewerage treatment plant, jail, downmarket bar, industry, crematorium and more. The night time tours incorporated "Industry by Night" and dinner at "Harry's Cafe de Wheels".

History - First tour 1978

I remember seeing a skit in Candid Camera as a kid. The tour bus took visitors to a car park and other odd spots - they were not impressed. I was on my third trip to Hawaii onboard the HMAS Perth. I needed to do something different - why not a boring tour of the place? But what would you call this tour? "Uninteresting" sounded good and then to top it off - put my name in front - how tacky. "Pat's uninteresting Tours" was born in 1978. The first passengers were Steve Smith, Sam Trimble, Glen Henderson, Dixie Lee, Gary Tutte (taking photo) and myself.

Following this two tours were held in Darwin in 79. Two in Canberra in 1981 and then a few in Sydney in 82 and 83 before I kicked it off as a business in 1985.

Early Days - First tour as a business -1986 - filmed by Mike Willesse program.

I was working at Grace Brothers in Bondi Junction as a spruiker. I mentioned to the lady on the information desk about my "idea" and that I was starting it as a business on March 17 - I didn't know where the customers would come from - I didn't know how I'd get them. She laughed and laughed - next day she told me her neighbour, Malcolm Andrews, a journalist on the Telegraph wanted to do a story. That story became the first of many media appearances about the tours - a week later Howard Gipps from the Mike Willesse program did a story (see below) in the three years of operation they appeared in 13 TV Shows, 42 Radio interviews and 38 Newspapers and Magazines. By far the most leads came from talk back radio thanks to Holger Brockman on 2BL (702) and 2GB. In the early days I was running day tours and most of the passengers were blotto by the end of the 4-hour tour. Amanda Keller, a producer on the Ray Martin Show, asked me to do something new so she could do a story - the night tours were born and mega publicity thanks to Amanda. In fact, I rarely did a day tour after that. Passengers would dress in their tacky evening wear and let me take them on an adventure they'd never forget. I am sure some still rave about it.

I did some advertising in those days. This is where I learnt the craft. When you pay for advertising out of your own pocket you quickly learn what works and what doesn't.

Kiwi Connection
Richard Wilkins was the promotions manager at 2UW. He contacted me and booked a tour for the staff at Radio Windy from Wellington NZ. They were coming to Sydney for a few days. That tour was completely mad - and I got a taste of the Kiwi humour. In fact, the bus got a flat tyre - we had no replacement - we were in the backwoods of Botany in the industrial areas and everyone was hungry. They started walking and found a function centre that just happened to have 40 spare meals - it was a riot of a night (some thought it was part of the tour). The bus was fixed and we went on our merry way. Some months later they took me to NZ for a week and I ran tours in Wellington, Palmerston North and Christchurch.

Flash Mobs - International Airport

Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harpers Magazine is reported to have invented "Flash Mobs" in Manhattan in 2003. But back in the mid 80's we did them numerous times in Sydney on the big bus. At selected destinations e.g. Central Station, International Airport, phone booth etc the passengers would disembark and all meet at a selected time at one point and be absurd for a minute then leave. At the International Airport we'd come from all directions and meet at the huge departure board and then start singing the destinations to Christmas carols. It did attract a few looks. This website gives "Pat's Uninteresting Tours" the credit for "flash mobs".. God love them.

That's Fairly Interesting TV Show recorded an episode of their show in Sydney in the late 80's. Neil Roberts recorded the segment. Thanks Neil - very sad you left us all so early. Your life is still an inspiration to many.

Interpid reporter Howard Gipps from Mike Willesse's program on Channel 9 filed the first story on the tours in March, 1985.
